GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Director of Nursing this position is responsible for coordinating and providing direct resident care in a residential setting, in compliance with all local, State and Federal regulations and requirements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Cues and assists residents with self-care (i.e., dressing; face and hand washing; toileting; bathing; other grooming and personal hygiene activities, seeking assistance when appropriate and maintaining residents’ rights.
• Assists residents with making beds and straightening rooms daily; changes linens weekly or whenever needed.
• Observes residents for changes (physical, psychological, social, appetite, etc.); reports any observed changes to the DON.
• Listens to report at the start of each shift.
• Responds to residents needs for emergency care in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Assists in setting up for various planned activities, such as arranging tables and chairs, preparing equipment, etc.
• Assists residents with participating in activities under the guidance of the activities staff; demonstrates competence in at least one type of group activity (music, exercise, discussion, art, etc.).
• Engages residents in one-to-one activity as needed; is alert to needs of individuals not involved in groups – is aware of available resources.
• Consults with the activities department regarding program improvements: new ideas, adaptations, different techniques, change in scheduling and programs, etc.
• Assists and supports volunteers as needed.
• Immediately reports all unusual incidents/events to immediate supervisor
• Reviews with immediate supervisor procedures not clearly defined to determine appropriate courses of action.
• Waitressing in the dining room during mealtime.
• Reports defective equipment and inadequate supply stock levels to immediate supervisor
• Takes/recommends corrective action on any unsafe conditions.
• Orients new staff.
• Maintain confidentiality of all RESIDENTS and EMPLOYEES information to assure that all rights are protected.
• Must treat all residents with dignity and respect at all times.
• Must have a clear understanding of resident rights and abuse reporting policies and procedures.
• Must report any actual or suspicion of resident abuse to the department supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
• Responsible for following all facility safety policies and procedures and reporting any safety issues or concerns to the appropriate personnel.
• Must report all incidents and accidents immediately to the department supervisor or other appropriate personnel as required by established policies and procedures.
• Responsible for following all facility infection control policies and procedures.
• Responsible for following all established professional and personnel policies and procedures.
• Participate in all in-services and departmental meetings as required.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Promotes and maintains positive community relations.
• Maintains current knowledge of trends and practices in the field through peer association, attendance at seminars, study, and review of literature.
• Attends all mandatory in-services.
• Reports any workplace safety concerns to Supervisor immediately.
• Performs other related duties as required.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
• High School diploma or the equivalent.
• Must possess PSS/C.N.A. certificate or be currently enrolled in a course.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be certified in CPR and 1st Aid.
• Previous experience in convalescent/geriatric resident care helpful.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
• Must possess the ability to deal professionally with personnel, residents, families, visitors, government agencies and the general public.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
• None
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Work is performed primarily in a nursing home environment, which is generally not subject to extremes in temperature, odors, etc.
• Stands, sits, and walks most of the working day.
• Must be able to push, pull or lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
• Uses computer keyboards requiring eye/hand coordination and finger dexterity.
