GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Director of Nursing this position is responsible for the completion of person-centered care for facility residents as stipulated in the resident care-plan.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Treats all residents with dignity and respect while interacting and providing care.
• Reports abuse or suspected abuse to the Charge Nurse, Unit Supervisor, or D.O.N. immediately, and contacts the abuse hotline via the phone number on the back of employee name pins.
• Documents all care provided in either the ECS or other designated areas.
• Report abnormal vital signs, symptoms, injuries/incidents immediately to the charge nurse.
• Provides assistance to residents to complete the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as presented in the resident care-plan .
• Provides range of motion, ambulates residents as directed.
• Assists resident dining: Provides supervision, cuing, and assistance with eating, per each resident’s care plan.
• Assists the charge nurse with emergency situations, i.e., transfers, positioning, vital signs.
• Works closely with co-workers and the charge nurse to promote team effort, provide coverage for breaks, and manage unexpected events.
• Participates in orientation of new CNAs.
• Performs housekeeping duties that relate to nursing care: makes beds, cleans bedside tables, urinals, bedpans, bedside commodes, spills, etc.
• Understands the concepts of pressure ulcer prevention and works as a team member to ensure residents receive good quality skin care.
• Performs restorative and rehabilitative procedures as directed.
• Assures that the nurse call system is in within reach of residents at all times when in bed or in their room.
• Assists other staff to move and/or lift residents when needed, following safety guidelines and use of the EZ Lift for residents who are unable to bear weight.
• Performs post-mortem care, ensuring the dignity and privacy of the deceased resident.
• Answers resident call lights promptly.
• Keeps residents’ personal articles off the floor and properly stored.
• Keeps the supply room, supply carts and work areas clean and well stocked at all times.
• Completes at least 12 hours of in-service education and staffing meetings per year, as required by the CNA Registry. This includes attendance at mandatory meeting and in-services.
• Assist residents in preparing for tests, x-rays, therapy activities, physician’s visits, religious services, etc. to include transporting residents to and from such activities.
• Participates in change of shift rounds as assigned.
• Adheres to facility’s CNA On-Call policy, which requires all CNA’s to be available, on a rotating schedule, to come in to work up to 4 hours early or work 4 hours late in order to meet minimum staffing requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Maintains confidentiality of all protected health information. Reports all observed violations of confidentiality policies directly to the Administrator.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Promotes and maintains positive community relations.
• Maintains current knowledge of trends and practices in the field through peer association, attendance at seminars, study, and review of literature.
• Attends all mandatory in-services.
• Reports any workplace safety concerns to Supervisor immediately.
• Performs other related duties as required.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
• Completion of High School or the equivalent
• Current listing on the Maine State CNA Registry with no annotations.
• Must possess the ability to deal professionally with personnel, residents, families, visitors, government agencies and the general public.
• Must be able to read and write English as it pertains to the position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
• There is no supervisory responsibility.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Work is performed primarily in a nursing home environment, which is generally not
subject to extremes in temperature. May be subject to biological or medical waste as position dictates.
• May require some lifting of equipment and assisting patients with physical activities.
• Requires standing, bending and/or heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) when assisting residents.
• Assistance to patients requires appropriate use of body mechanics.
• Continuous standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and twisting.
• Exposure to possible infectious and communicable diseases and other biological hazards requiring exercise
